I saw some golden leaves on my patio today, not a trend yet, just a few anomolies scattered around, but it has me thinking.
One of the things I have a hard time with is thinking several seasons ahead. In the design process I sometimes work a full year ahead as the seasonal light and ambiance are inspiring. But each season I discard some of those works that I have carefully prepared and rush in the newer ideas that have flooded me and somehow feel urgent. New and fresh color schemes that may be timely. I am constantly surprised when I get an itch to introduce a new color and the next month it pops up in all the magazines … something about the collective unconscious? Or maybe I am just a tad color sensitive and discern the incoming trends?
Then there is the photoshoots – trying to make Spring look like Autumn, Summer like Winter???? Magazines want to see Fall lines when I am just getting used to the idea that Spring is on the way. So we are constantly juggling to get great images of pillows in the appropriate seasons for my “outdoor room” theme! I love the images from these shoots as they are playful and whimsical. Everyone has seen pillows in a bedroom or living room setting – but what if that room has no walls and the outdoors is a part of the living? This is what makes me smile when I sort through the many images we prepare several times a year. But indoor shots tell a story, so we try to fit them in as well.
So why am I talking about this? Because, months later than I should be, I am shooting for the fall catalogue. We are bringing back our signature golds for this Autumn. Our deep golden pillows with their white accents are fresh, bold and perfect transitions from the cooling Summer blues to the warming spicier colors we like in our Fall decor. In early September you might see us mix them up, a little blue, a little gold… reminds me of my school uniform! Hmmm, some sort of remembrance to back-to-school in my early fall mix? Maybe – or maybe it is the golden leaves against the bright blue sky that give me little frisson?

Or maybe it is just layering in the new season, a slow adjustment to the idea of taking the a/c units out of the windows in our old farmhouse and hearing the heat kick on in the middle of the first clear and cold starlit night sometime in late September. Early Fall – it is all about the layering… A sweater tossed on over a shell to cover morning chill and afternoon heat. A little gold accenting to ease us from Summer’s relaxed attitude and back to the scheduled busy-ness of the Fall season of education and culture. Autumn is my favorite time of year. Harvest time, the spectacular displays of color, a sense of urgency to make a nest for the oncoming winter and the smells of baking, apples and cinnamon, that first hint of fragrant smoke from a nearby woodstove. All of the senses are piqued with this layering of delights.
So – while we are all enjoying the bright long days of summer, we are also considering the quieter joys of the golden fall to come. The image above is a “sneak preview” from our “pre-shoot” early this morning.
